Our Story
Jodi and Melissa met when their preteen daughters were in kindergarten and have been friends ever since. As Girl Scout co-leaders, they spent years planning meetings, making crafts, organizing adventures, and creating memorable experiences for their girls.
They've always loved games, creativity, and bringing people together, so when they discovered American Mahjong, learning it together was an easy choice. It didn't take long for them to be completely hooked.
Today, they're proud to serve as Troop Mahjong Chapter Leaders for the Grapevine, Colleyville, and Southlake area. Founded by Kristel Powell and inspired by the spirit of Troop Beverly Hills, Troop Mahjong is a nationwide community that connects players through local chapters, events, and a shared love of the game.
Bams & Bling grew from that same spirit: a place where people can discover a game they love, challenge themselves, laugh a little louder, and leave looking forward to their next game.
What is Mahjong?
Mahjong originated in China during the 19th century and has been enjoyed by players around the world ever since. As the game spread across different countries and cultures, it evolved into many distinct styles, each with its own traditions, rules, and strategies. Today, popular variations include American Mahjong, Japanese Riichi, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Singaporean, Malaysian, and Vietnamese Mahjong.
At Bams & Bling, we teach American Mahjong, a version that has been enjoyed in the United States for nearly a century. American Mahjong has its own unique rules and style of play and follows the annual playing card published by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL).
Although each variation is different, the heart of Mahjong remains the same. It's a game of strategy, skill, and lifelong learning that brings people together around the table. We are grateful for Mahjong's rich cultural heritage and are honored to teach and celebrate the American version of this timeless game.
Mahjong has also made memorable appearances in popular culture through films such as The Joy Luck Club, Crazy Rich Asians, and Driving Miss Daisy, along with television series including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Today, people of all ages continue to discover American Mahjong as a rewarding way to challenge their minds, build friendships, and enjoy time together.
